The Parliament Choir is always keen to expand. If you are a member
of the House of Lords or of the House of Commons, or if you are a
member of the staff of either House, you are eligible to join.
There is no audition –just come along. We rehearse every Monday
evening, while Parliament is in session, from 6.15 until 8.15 in the
Crypt Chapel just off Westminster Hall, where we enjoy not only the
pleasure of working in a beautiful place with a wonderful acoustic
but also the privilege of being accompanied on the Chapel’s fine
organ by a first-class accompanist in the person of our Assistant
Music Director, Nicholas O’Neill.
Our repertoire is varied, ranging from challenging large-scale works
such as Verdi’s Requiem, which we sang in both Coventry and
Westminster Cathedrals, through to an annual carol concert in the
Atrium of Portcullis House. We have tackled bits of opera, lots of
church music and even an occasional madrigal under the patient
(mostly!) eye of our conductor Simon Over, who also directs our
resident orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia, which has been playing for
our concerts since its formation in 2002.
We also offer regular sectional classes, organised and run by
Nicholas O’Neill on Tuesday evenings, concentrating on detailed
examination of whatever we are currently rehearsing, together with
some work on technique.
You don’t have to be an experienced singer. You don’t have to be
able to sight-read brilliantly – or at all. You just have to enjoy
making music with other people. We set ourselves high standards
and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved in our first five years, but
most of all we aim to be welcoming and inclusive, with a friendly,
supportive approach to our work. If you would like to join us, please
get in touch via this website, or come to a rehearsal and hear us in
action. You’ll be very welcome.
