Southbank Sinfonia This year Southbank Sinfonia celebrates its fifth anniversary. Since its establishment it has been widely welcomed throughout the music profession and beyond. A unique venture, the inspiration of Music Director, Simon Over, Southbank Sinfonia provides an intensive eight-month orchestral apprenticeship over eight months each year for 32 of the very best young graduates of UK music colleges. Its primary mission is to give the players, who each receive a bursary over the duration of the programme, additional skills and the experience to help smooth their way through the notoriously difficult transition period between conservatoire and the music profession. Southbank Sinfonia is increasingly recognised for its pioneering spirit, exploring and leading the way forward for the 21st-century musician.

In addition to performance and to specialist individual and ensemble coaching, Southbank Sinfonia players are offered many opportunities for professional development and are trained to undertake education projects in schools both near the orchestra's home in Waterloo and all over the country, wherever the orchestra tours. Partnerships formed with other musical and educational organisations are being developed year by year and are of great mutual benefit. As well as the Parliament Choir they include British Youth Opera, the Royal Opera House, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Brunel University, the Samling Foundation and Wells Cathedral School.

In 2007 Southbank Sinfonia will again give more than 90 orchestral and chamber performances all over the UK and in Italy. Thursday evening Rush Hour concerts in St John's Waterloo allow members of Southbank Sinfonia to explore and learn a wide range of repertoire over the season and work with many distinguished visiting conductors and soloists. Highlights of the year include an anniversary concert in Cadogan Hall in May conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy, the orchestra's Patron, a concert on Ischia in July and a recording - Southbank Sinfonia's first - of Russian music, Prokofiev and Shchedrin, with Raphael Wallfisch as soloist.
